Writing with a Right Mindset

right mindset

I now have several friends who are authors. I’ve known other authors, but it’s like buying a certain car. Once you’ve bought that brand/style/color…you see them everywhere!

This is how it is for me.

It has taken me a while to really believe in myself. Only as I saw this as a gift of God could I really embrace the successful aspect of it all. Knowing that the devotionals God puts on my heart to write are going all over the world is breath-catching stuff. They are truly His writings and I hope and pray every day that God is pleased and can use the writings for His glory.

My adventures in self publishing have been a lot like Alice in the Looking Glass. Sometimes I felt small, oh so small. Sometimes I feel huge and unable to go through the next step. I’ve learned about prayer and the importance of having real heart-to-heart conversations with God.

I know things I would do differently now. But I have no real regrets. I just didn’t really want to learn so much! You will have to have certain mindsets to accomplish what God is calling you to.

Here are some mindsets I’ve had to have:

1.  God has called you to this.

If you know God has called you to write, then that gives you the stamina it takes to write, publish, sell, promote, explain, share and minister out of your writing. Yes, God even wants to use you to minister to others through what you write.

2. Remember what the Bible says about the mind and apply it to your writing.

Philippians 2:5 says, “have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” (He was a servant first and foremost, even though He has rights as the King of Kings)

1 Corinthians 2:16 says, “But we have the mind of Christ.” (We can call on Him for help in writing. Why not? He gave you the talent, He has a story for you to tell in this art form, whether it’s fiction or non fiction)

3.  Keep your eyes on the REAL prize.

Philippians 3:14 says,

I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”

4.  Remember Who you represent (as a believer who is an author).

You’re not competing for a position with others. You are unique, even though one of many, many, many authors, you are still unique. You belong to God, so you want to remember to glorify God in what you do. He is the one who is going to give you success. Work heartily at it, but remember where your success ultimately lies.

Colossians 3:23-24

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.”

Romans 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

Romans 11:29

for God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.

1 Corinthians 9:24

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

Have a wonderful time writing. Enjoy it! Keep typing, keep praying, keep moving forward. There is an end and a prize. God loves you and He’s for you, and that’s what really matters!

QUESTION: What do you think is the right mindset for Christian writers to write?

You are so right. Sometimes it starts to seem like a burden instead of the gift it is. Thanks!

Thanks for this encouraging post, Rebekah. I am also a self-publisher and can relate to all these tips. I love the way you articulated them and the Bible verses you included. Thanks for the encouragement and wise words of advice!

The right mindset for me involves obedience. What does God want me to write? When I focus there, I accomplish much. When I don’t, I struggle and spin my wheels.

I know what you mean. I was very slow to understand my calling and very slow to accept it. However, the fulfillment and peace that accompany this work are God’s enduring reminder that this is where I belong. When I feel afraid or discouraged or even angry, God reminds me that I am doing what he created me to do. At last. My obedience is blessed by a sense of fulfillment that no other work every provides.
Like you, I have learned that I must learn things I did not even want to know. Thank you for reminding me that I am not alone.

Number 1 is the clincher for me. I think it puts everything into perspective. For me the right mindset is “He must increase and I must decrease.” Thanks for the encouraging article!
