Website Design

Every writer has a life-changing message he or she wants to share with the people scattered both around their city and across the globe.  In today’s fast-paced, highly technological culture, one of the best ways to do this is through a professionally designed website.

Being the senior pastor of a Baptist church myself, I understand the limitations God’s people have with regards to their spending budget.  God has called each of us to be wise stewards of the funds He distributes our way.  The last thing any Christian wants to do is squander that money through nothing more than the hasty purchase of an expensive website.

And that’s where I come in.

Being a bi-vocational pastor/businessman, one of the ways I support my family is by designing and maintaining websites for churches, para-church ministries, and Christian authors/bloggers.  Because I do this work both as a man providing for his family as well as a virtual missionary assisting believers in their financial stewardship and online presence, I believe my website design services are exactly what God-honoring, Christ-exalting, Bible-believing authors are in need of today.

But why, exactly, does a Christian writer/author need a fresh and attractive website?  Here’s what the apostle Paul had to say about it.

“For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak.  I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.”  – 1 Corinthians 9:19-22

Personally, I’m convinced that—in today’s highly technological society—a Christian author’s website most certainly qualifies as “all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

Does It Really Only Cost $499?

Your website or blog is your best form of advertising.  It is available for honest scrutiny 24/7 and can be accessed by anyone, any time, from anywhere around the world, and from practically any modern electronic device, including handheld ones.  A website is the first impression you will make to most of your potential readers, fans, and future book purchasers.

This is your chance to make a favorable online impression, highlighting the effectiveness of your message while letting the viewers know what they can expect if they stop by daily for an online visit.  For the most part, a “tired” or outdated author website is indicative of the writer itself.  So make it shine!

There are a few “free” cookie-cutter website services out there but, as the saying goes, “You get what you pay for.”  Don’t be that author.  You’ve been working too passionately on your manuscript for that to happen.  Don’t subject yourself—and your book—to a negative online reputation.

But the opposite end of the spectrum is also true.  Some website design companies out there (even those specializing in “author” websites) charge way too much in their upfront pricing, their monthly maintenance charges are cost prohibitive, and their philosophy in how they define “Christian” can be rather suspect at best.

Essentially, the upfront cost for me to design your blog and/or website, develop the theme of your book’s online brand, create your social networking profiles, assist in purchasing your domain & required hosting package, activate your email accounts, etc., is $499.

Overall, my fees are less than half of what most other companies charge for just their standard, “out-of-the-box” design package.

Please understand that I am able to charge so little because I do this primarily as a bi-vocational ministry to like-minded Christian writes while serving as a church-planting pastor and soon-to-be-published author myself.  (Oh yes, I almost forgot.  I also happen to love the creative outlet of web design!)

I use the core software of WordPress to design all my websites.  In addition to the initial website design, I will install the latest version of WordPress on your company’s server, or update any outdated existing ones.  I will also install any required plug-ins or databases, and import any blog data from your old site.  Finally, I’ll install your custom theme (see below), configure any settings, and provide any on-going training regarding updating and managing your corporate blog, if applicable.

All of the themes below are WordPress themes built on the Genesis theme Framework, which means that they are well coded, have built in SEO functionality, and come with state-of-the-art security features.[/stextbox]

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the answers to some Frequently Asked Questions regarding my website design services.

[stextbox id=”custom” caption=”Why are your prices so inexpensive?  Is there a catch?”]I get asked this question a lot. My answer is simple: I want to be a blessing to God-honoring churches, missionaries, ministries, and Christian authors.  Some design companies charge thousands of dollars because of the “perceived value” it creates for their services.  I care about providing top-quality website design services for every biblical ministry and Christ-honoring writer that needs it.  It may sound strange but I do not see this as a profit-making service but rather a helpful ministry to God’s people.  I have a heart for Christian ministries declaring the Christian message, and I want to help them fulfill the purpose God has for them.[/stextbox]

[stextbox id=”custom” caption=”Do you provide the website hosting yourself?”]Not currently, though it is something I am looking into for the near future.  Every website on the internet has servers that “host” their site so that it can be viewable on the internet.  This is where Bluehost comes in, the company I personally use to host many of my own websites.  Bluehost charges around $6 per month for their basic hosting package (which is what I use).  My design cost of $499 does NOT contemplate this necessary 3rd party hosting service/charge.[/stextbox]

[stextbox id=”custom” caption=”Are there any hidden fees?”]No.  The $499 one-time design/setup fee is the cost for my WordPress website design and implementation.  Any subsequent and voluntary, outside-of-the-box custom design or development work you would like is $40/hour.  In other words, if a couple of years down the road you decide that you want to completely overhaul the design of your website, the cost will be $40/hour.[/stextbox]

[stextbox id=”custom” caption=”Are there any limits to the number of pages I can have?”]No.  I do not want to limit your writing ministry in any way.  I want your website to shine, reach thousands of people with your message, highlight your book, and honor the Lord.  If that means 5 pages, 20 pages, or even 80 pages…let’s get it done and done right![/stextbox]

[stextbox id=”custom” caption=”Will my website be searchable by Google and other search engines?”]Yes.  One of the reasons I use StudioPress for the design of my author’s websites is because the core foundation for their themes was created with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in mind.  To keep it as non-techie as possible, all of the content from your site…as well as additional keywords…are formatted so that all search engines can understand and easily index them.[/stextbox]

[stextbox id=”custom” caption=”Do I need a domain name first or will you help me with that as well?”]Yes, and yes.  The domain name is your website’s URL.  It is the www.authornamehere.com that people use to reach your website.  If you don’t already have a domain URL, I can assist you in determining the best one and assist you in purchasing and pointing it to your website.  I do not take ownership of your domain when you transfer it to me.  I believe that you should have the freedom to control your own domain name.  If you don’t already have your own domain name, I would recommend purchasing your domain through NameCheap.com, which will cost about $10 per year.[/stextbox]

[stextbox id=”custom” caption=”What types of writers will you—or will you not—work with?”]I offer my design services to any God-honoring and gospel-believing church, para-church organization, missionary, or Bible-centered author.  (You can review my own personal Doctrinal Statement of Faith by clicking here.)  What I mean by this is that I partner with churches and writers that believe and teach that faith in Jesus Christ is the only requirement for eternal salvation, and that good works do not earn or sustain salvation but are the inevitable fruit of salvation.  Ultimately, there are thousands of organizations and “authors” that I will not work with because they do not meet this absolutely necessary requirement.[/stextbox]

[stextbox id=”custom” caption=”Do you have an estimated timeline for delivery?”]You can expect to receive the first draft of your design within 3-5 business days from the day I start your project.  Each revision of your design may take an additional 2-4 business days depending on the complexity of your request.  Once you approve the design via email, I’ll complete the live install within 48 hours, typically.[/stextbox]

[stextbox id=”custom” caption=”Will you have a credit line in the footer section of my website?”]As with most things in life, every blog and web design I create remains my intellectual property, and I do retain the copyright.  A credit linking back to this website (something similar to: “Website designed by Charles Specht“) will be placed in your footer, and will remain intact as long as my design is present on your blog or website.  This “credit line” helps in establishing my credibility with any other like-minded authors also considering my website design services.[/stextbox]

[stextbox id=”custom” caption=”Sounds great!  How do I get started?”]It’s easy, really.  The first step is to contact me.  Once we mutually agree to move forward, we will then discuss exactly what you’re looking for, what the “look” of your website should be like, what your expectations of me are, what information you want available on your website, who will gather all the text (content) and pictures for your website, etc.  Once we have the basics figured out and in my hands, I should be able to have the first draft of your website up and running in roughly 3-5 business days.[/stextbox]

So, are you ready to move forward?  Contact me when you are.  Thank you and God bless!
