Put Your Pen to Paper, Christian Writer

pen to paper

When I think about writing about writing I feel so inadequate.

  • No training
  • No preparation
  • No degrees or words or numbers behind my name.

Yet for me writing is just as important as breathing. I’m up every morning listening for the still small voice to give me something worth talking about. There are times when I cry at the computer screen because the words aren’t there. Every single day I say,

“Lord, if you don’t show up I’m done here.”

For me writing came as an afterthought and yet 30 years ago I was told in a Women’s Meeting that I would write and write books of all things! How did I get from there to here?

Oh Beloved, Live in the Light of His Word came as a result of just learning to listen to God and learning that He wanted to speak to seeking hearts through me.  Such a humbling and wonderful ting.

Put the Pen to Paper

My suggestion to all Christian writers, those who are born again, is that they start first by learning to hear from the Spirit of the Lord. He wants to talk to His beloved followers. He speaks truth into the hearts of His children. He uses everyday ordinary circumstances to teach His Word.

Just as He spoke to His disciples in the Sermon on the Mount and other parables, He wants to speak to you. Tuning in to God will require time and effort. It will require giving yourself to Him and walking in faith. It’s not hard but it is a learned experience. You can write a good story, but when it’s filled with God’s Spirit others will be blessed.

Know the Word of God. Read it often and learn it well. Then God will be able to send His message home to your heart. Pray. God talks to us and we talk to Him in prayer. Not lofty, religious rhote, but talk to Him. He is after all, your best Friend and your Savior. You have the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwelling in you! (Romans 8:11)

I’m praying for all who want to hear from God and share with others. Let God speak into your heart and then put the pen to paper. Be God’s typist. He loves you and He’s for you and that’s all that really matters as you learn to live in the Light of His Word.

This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:

“I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow.” (Isaiah 48:17)

QUESTION: What do you do when you’re having difficulty putting pen to paper and write for God’s glory?

Reading the book of Isaiah always inspires my writing. Sometimes, I just read the verses I have highlighted (quite a few, actually) and just those inspire my writing. My favorite is Isaiah 43:18-19 where God says he’s going to make what seems impossible happen. God’s word fuels my passion for writing.

Thanks, Rebekah. Putting the pen to paper (or the fingers to the keyboard) is necessary for getting our content out there. God can’t use our writing to bless other people if we don’t actually write.

May God richly bless your writing ministry!

Here’s what I do, first I go out and get some exercise, then I come in, sit down at my desk, say a prayer, put my headphones on and force myself to write at least 500 words!
